Bruce E. Spivey, MD, Fund for Risk Management Studies The Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Academy) and the Board of Directors of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC) are pleased to recognize and honor Dr. Bruce E. Spivey for his commitment to quality patient care, his service to the Academy and OMIC, and his leadership within the profession by establishing within the Academy’s Foundation the Bruce E. Spivey, MD, Fund for Risk Management Studies. Spivey Fund The rate of growth and change in medical knowledge, therapies, treatments, healthcare economics, and regulatory and medical-legal environments has accelerated with unprecedented speed and introduced new, higher levels of clinical risk. Conservative estimates predict that medical knowledge will double every five years. To help Academy members navigate this rapidly evolving world, the Academy and OMIC are building upon a 25-year partnership to achieve their common goals of risk reduction for ophthalmologists and improved patient care. In pursuit of these goals, the Academy and OMIC will undertake joint projects that promote high quality patient care. These joint projects will be conducted within the Academy Foundation’s H. Dunbar Hoskins, Jr., MD Center for Quality Eye Care and include:
Recognizing a Leader in Ophthalmology and Quality of Care – Bruce E. Spivey, MD Dr. Spivey, trained as an ophthalmologist and a medical educator, has a wide range of physician and hospital management experience. He has served as a departmental chairman for 16 years, a hospital CEO for 16 years, and the CEO of multi-hospital systems for over 14 years. He is currently President of the International Council of Ophthalmology. He has served on many boards of international, national, and regional health care organizations and ophthalmologic societies. His past positions include President of the American Board of Medical Specialties; President of the American Ophthalmological Society; President of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies; member of the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee; and member of the Board of the Voluntary Hospitals of America. He is the recipient of a number of medals and awards in ophthalmology and medicine. Dr. Spivey is the author of over 120 scientific education and management articles and often addresses major meetings in the health care field. He has given over 30 named lectures. Dr. Spivey is a founding member of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company and served a total of 19 years on its committees and Board of Directors. OMIC is the medical professional liability insurance company founded by and insuring members of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. From 1976 - 1992, Dr. Spivey served as the Founding Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The Academy is the largest national membership association of ophthalmologists, medical and osteopathic doctors who provide comprehensive eye care, including medical, surgical, and optical care. The mission of the American Academy of Ophthalmology is to advance the lifelong learning and professional interests of ophthalmologists to ensure that the public can obtain the best possible eye care.
