The Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Board of Directors of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC) are pleased to honor Dr. Spivey for his commitment to quality patient care, his service to the Academy and OMIC, and his leadership within the profession through the Bruce E. Spivey, MD, Fund for Risk Management Studies.
The Academy and OMIC undertake joint projects that promote high quality patient care. These projects include:
- Developing innovative risk management and patient safety initiatives, studies and educational programs that will improve the quality of eye care around the world;
- Exploring new ways of bringing risk management and patient safety programs to all Academy members worldwide, including through the Bruce E. Spivey, MD, lecture held during the Academy’s annual meeting; and
- Developing tools that measure the effectiveness of risk management and patient safety education initiatives and their impact on physician and institutional behavior.
Bruce E. Spivey, MD, MS, MEd
Renowned educator, clinician and transformative leader, Dr. Spivey served as the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s first executive vice president and chief executive officer (1978-1992).
He is a founding member of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company and served 19 years on its committees and board of directors. OMIC is the medical professional liability insurance company founded by and insuring members of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
In addition to his service with the Academy and OMIC, he has served in countless leadership positions at notable organizations including the American Board of Ophthalmology, the California Pacific Medical Center, the American Board of Medical Specialties, and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. His community involvement includes founding the Pacific Vision Foundation in 1977, where he served on the board of directors and became chairman in 2008.
Dr. Spivey is the recipient of over 40 medals and awards in ophthalmology and medicine. He is the author of over 140 peer-reviewed scientific, education and management articles and has given over 40 named lectures, including the prestigious Edward Jackson Memorial Lecture at the Academy's annual meeting. He received the Academy’s highest honor, the Laureate Award, in 2015.
