The Parke Center honors David W. Parke II, MD, the Academy’s CEO from 2009 – 2022.
The Parke Center will be a much-needed conference facility that will enhance the Academy's ability to build and strengthen relationships with ophthalmic leaders and key partners at Academy headquarters in San Francisco. Fully configurable, fully wired and seamlessly integrated, the Parke Center will be a dynamic conference center facility for the benefit of the Academy, its partners, its tenants, and all of ophthalmology. The Ophthalmic Education Fund supports the development of high-quality clinical education resources for ophthalmologists. Donor contributions help provide ophthalmologists worldwide with the educational materials needed to deliver the best possible care to millions facing blindness or visual impairment.
A main priority of the Ophthalmic Education Fund is the Academy’s Ophthalmic News & Education (ONE®) Network, the world’s largest online compendium of ophthalmic knowledge. Donor support will help fund the site's next major phase of development, which includes the expansion of state-of-the-art educational tools such as surgical videos, instructional podcasts, self-assessments and practice guidelines. Your gift will allow us to improve the content, usability and global accessibility of the ONE Network so ophthalmologists everywhere can more effectively protect sight and empower lives.
The Academy is building a new, permanent home at our San Francisco headquarters for the Truhlsen-Marmor Museum of the Eye™. It will be the only medical museum in our hometown and the only publicly accessible, comprehensive collection of ophthalmic artifacts on permanent display in the United States.
This free, public museum will introduce the world to the science of sight — and to the field of ophthalmology dedicated to protecting it.

The largest public service program in American medicine, the Academy’s EyeCare America® program helps seniors and those who are at greater risk for eye disease receive sight-saving care.
Since 1985, EyeCare America’s more than 5,000 volunteer ophthalmologists have helped more than 2 million people nationwide. Each year, thousands of at-risk individuals are referred for medical eye exams at no out-of-pocket cost. EyeCare America has been recommended by AARP, Reader’s Digest, Dear Abby, and more.
Your support will allow us to continue to provide no-cost eye exams and provide other eye care resources and services to those who need it most, so they can continue to live full, independent lives.

H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD
Dr. Hoskins served as the Executive Vice President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology from 1993 to 2009. He is an internationally recognized glaucoma specialist, having authored or co-authored more than 70 publications and presented more than 300 invited lectures.
He received an Academy Honor Award in 1979, a Senior Honor Award in 1989 and Distinguished Service Award in 1999. He is also a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society and Sigma Zeta Honor Society, and was listed in the March 1991 issue of Good Housekeeping as one of “The 400 Best Doctors in America,” as well as being repeatedly listed in the “Best Doctors in America.”
Dr. Hoskins has held numerous other positions in ophthalmology, medicine and business. Among the highlights: Chairman of St. Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, chairman of Mercy Services Corporation, founder and chairman of Medem Corporation, founding director of the American Glaucoma Society, founder and director of the Foundation for Glaucoma Research, secretary-treasurer of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, and chairman of the advisory committee to the International Council of Ophthalmology. He is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.
For more than 25 years, the Academy’s Global Outreach programs have given ophthalmologists in developing nations access to the clinical information they need to diagnose and treat millions who would otherwise lose their sight.
With donor support, our Education Distribution Project fills a critical need by providing ONE Network access, Basic and Clinical Science Course™ (BCSC®) book sets and other educational materials to ophthalmologists in countries with extremely limited resources. It also allows us to bring international ophthalmologists to the Academy’s annual meeting through the Rotary Club Host Project, thus building global collaboration and expertise.
The Minority Ophthalmology Mentoring Program is a partnership between the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology.
The purpose of the program is to increase diversity in ophthalmology by helping qualified minority students who are underrepresented in medicine become competitive ophthalmology residency applicants. Students receive one-on-one mentorship, valuable guidance in medical career planning, networking opportunities and access to a variety of educational resources.
Public health evidence reveals that access to care improves when the physician community reflects the population at large. Although underrepresented minority groups comprise 30% of the U.S. population, they only make up 6% of practicing ophthalmologists. Your gift to this program ensures a more equitable, effective future for minority ophthalmologists and their patients.
The Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Board of Directors of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC) are pleased to honor Dr. Spivey for his commitment to quality patient care, his service to the Academy and OMIC, and his leadership within the profession through the Bruce E. Spivey, MD, Fund for Risk Management Studies.

Bruce E. Spivey, MD, MS, MEd
Renowned educator, clinician and transformative leader, Dr. Spivey served as the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s first executive vice president and chief executive officer (1978-1992).
He is a founding member of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company and served 19 years on its committees and board of directors. OMIC is the medical professional liability insurance company founded by and insuring members of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
In addition to his service with the Academy and OMIC, he has served in countless leadership positions at notable organizations including the American Board of Ophthalmology, the California Pacific Medical Center, the American Board of Medical Specialties, and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. His community involvement includes founding the Pacific Vision Foundation in 1977, where he served on the board of directors and became chairman in 2008.
Dr. Spivey is the recipient of over 40 medals and awards in ophthalmology and medicine. He is the author of over 140 peer-reviewed scientific, education and management articles and has given over 40 named lectures, including the prestigious Edward Jackson Memorial Lecture at the Academy's annual meeting. He received the Academy’s highest honor, the Laureate Award, in 2015.
The rate of growth and change in medical knowledge, therapies, treatments and the healthcare environment has exploded since the Academy’s Ethics Program was first established in 1984. With these changes, new professional and ethical issues and considerations in the practice of ophthalmology have developed equally fast, requiring the program to continuously evolve and expand its educational role and offerings.
Today, in addition to its role in educating practicing U.S. ophthalmologists, the program also provides education for residents, program directors and international ophthalmologists. Future plans include educational initiatives for practice administrators and allied health professionals. As a result, the need for a more well-defined and identifiable resource to coordinate and implement these varying efforts is crucial.
The Michael R. Redmond, MD, Professionalism and Ethics Education Center Endowment Fund addresses this growing need and to ensure that the Academy’s efforts in promoting professionalism and ethics remain vibrant, dynamic, comprehensive and relevant in an increasingly changing and global ophthalmic community.

In addition to serving as a member and vice chair of the Academy’s Ethics Committee, Dr. Redmond served on the Academy's Board of Trustees from 1993 to 1999, first as chairman and vice chairman of the Council and then as trustee-at-large. He was elected by the Academy's more than 25,000 members to serve as the organization's president in 2003. Other Academy positions Dr. Redmond held include representative to the American Medical Association's House of Delegates, chairman of EyeCare America's Children's EyeCare Program and chairman of the Academy’s Long-Range Planning Committee.
Making a gift where most needed helps the Academy Foundation achieve its mission to prevent global blindness through education and service. Foundation funding allows Academy programs to improve continuing education, build on beneficial service programs and promote better ways to provide patient care.
